Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) – BBBS helps children realize their potential and build their futures by nurturing children and strengthening communities.
Boys & Girls Club of America (BGCA) – BGCA’s programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.
Cross-Cultural Solutions (CCS) – CCS’s mission is to operate volunteer programs around the world in partnership with sustainable community initiatives, bringing people together to work side-by-side while sharing perspectives and fostering cultural understanding.
Habitat for Humanity – Habitat is a nonprofit, Christian ministry founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live.
HandsOn Network – HandsOn Network is the largest volunteer network in the nation and includes more than 250 HandsOn Action Centers in 16 countries that are answering the call to serve and creating meaningful change in their communities. I try to volunteer with DC Cares at least once a week – lots of options and you can start tomorrow.
Kiva – No time? You can still change a life by investing in individual enterprise. “Kiva works with microfinance institutions on five continents to provide loans to people without access to traditional banking systems.”
Peace Corps – Peace Corps volunteers help countless individuals who want to build a better life for themselves, their children and their communities.
United Way Worldwide – Give, Advocate, Volunteer. “United Way improves lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good.” There are countless, simple ways to get involved.
WorldTeach – WorldTeach partners with governments and other organizations in developing countries to provide volunteer teachers to meet local needs and promote responsible global citizenship. I spent a year with WorldTeach in Ecuador and it was without a doubt the most amazing year of my life!
